Wow - what to say. Almost anything would be a spoiler and, if you've read along this far, you'll want the adventure for yourself. (I did.).What I can say is that Lady Trent's story has escalated, volume by volume, with increasingly perilous explorations and increasingly valuable discoveries. This blows the top off that trend. She's made friends (not to mention husband and temporary wife) with increasing value to her then-uncommon lifestyle, and blows the top off that trend. She has become increasingly important to and annoying to whoever is in charge at the time and place, and blows several different tops off that trend.
And [a spoiler you saw coming anyway], becomes the first woman to take a seat at the Colloquium - and by unanimous acclaim. I suspect it was less for her glory than for theirs, but a point of pride for her nonetheless. Even at that, a few of the older boys in the boys' club needed a talking-to, involving a prediction of chill to their own welcome if they objected. BTW, her husband and son gain recognition of their own, and not just because of her aura,
This is decidedly YA stuff. You won't find the subtlety, contradiction, and open-endedness of deep literature. You will find a powerful woman as role model, not shattering the walls around her gender role, barely even pushing against them, but showing by action how walls around larger spaces would benefit everyone. And, from the first, this shows how strong women enhance the status of strong men - the other way around, too, but not just the other way around. Her new marriage exemplifies this: a field naturalist and a linguist/archaeologist might seem like The Odd Couple until that combination proves the answer to a question no one imagined to ask.

Within the Sanctuary of Wings A Memoir by Lady Trent The Lady Trent Memoirs Marie Brennan Books Reviews
This was an incredible read, and I'm glad I stuck with the books to the end. I do wish that there had been more of Suhail and Tom than there was, and while I wish the end solution had been a bit more complex than it was, I also realize that while things probably were more complex than that, Isabella also didn't really care about the hows and the whys so much as the actual end result.
The great conclusion to a wonderful series! Definitely check the series out if you haven't! Unlike many current fantasy series out there, this series doesn't rely on big action/fight scenes to move the story along. The excitement is driven by wanting to follow Isabella on her path to uncover the many mysteries that surround her chosen field of study - that is the natural history of dragons. I'm sad that the whole series is over...but as a scientists it was so amazing to find a book that truly captures the essence of the early history of natural science, and the difficulties found in navigating academia (especially for a woman in a Victorian-esque timeline!). Couldn't recommend this series more!!
I ABSOLUTELY LOVED THIS BOOK!
Marie Brennan did not disappoint with this final book in the series. I didn't get even close to predicting her final discovery. One I read the plot twist I had to stop reading and just absorb it. It was probably the happiest I have been all year reading this book! I am sad to see this story come to a close, but Brennan couldn't have written a better ending! This is definitely my best book of the year.
This is the fifth and final book in the Lady Trent series chronicling the exciting life of Lady Trent, gentlewoman dragon enthusiast turned scientist. Although each book stands on its own, all of the books are great reads so starting with book one, A Natural History of Dragons, and working through all the volume is well worth the time.
Set in a parallel world not unlike the Victorian Era on Earth, Lady Trent has spent her life traveling the world to study the numerous species of dragons that inhabit this world. Along the way, she has pushed the boundaries of both science and society, her headstrong self-assurance slowly changing the minds of fellow dragon researchers and the misogynist world at large.
The last book in the Lady Trent series, "Wings" places the intrepid female naturalist in the soaring mountains of a land that's Tibet in everything but name. Isabella (now Lady Trent) sets off to search for her biggest find yet a new dragon species. But what she finds is much more than she ever imagined. I did find this volume to be slower paced and less exciting than the earlier books, although the world building and details about mountaineering were incredible. It's still a fantastic read, and a must for dragon fans. Although there's no sex to speak of and frankly not enough violence, this series is best suited for adult fantasy readers, although some older teens might enjoy it. It's an excellent series that features an older female scientist as the great hero of an adventure story. I would highly recommend this book, as well as the entire series.
This is a very proper finale for a very good series of books. Reading some of the other reviews, I cannot think of an ending book of a serie receiving so many good critiques. I have to add my good review to it cause it was just so good!
My compliments to the author for being able to write it so well. Seamlessly blending elements from fantasy, proper scientific theories and correct historical settings into such a beautiful world, incredibly detailed where politics and warfare are there in the background, social norms and public opinions are there and work and everything feels real is no small task.
Adding to that being able to write characters that are detailed and alive and making choices that sometimes help and sometimes don't as normal people would do is also not easy and not at all simple.
The only small discordance in my opinion is in a few point it felt a bit rushed. In this last book, Lady Trent ended up making a bit too many right choices, and being a bit too lucky which to me felt a bit too far fetched at points.
Still, a masterpiece and a story that should be added to the classics.
