Island of Fog A Magical Fantasy Adventure eBook Keith Robinson Reviews
I have never written a review before. This series has forced me to get on a box and shout how good it is. I downloaded the first book, Island of Fog for free on January 22nd. Today is February 6th, and I have just finished the fifth book in the series. It was good enough that I just dove in and enjoyed my time in the world where these magical books take place.
They are well written, fun and scoot you out of here and now into their realm. Keith Robinson is a gifted writer, and I am anxiously waiting the last book in this trilogy. I hope there are many more.
I am not a kid, I have three children 13 to 17. This holds the interest of mature adults too, not just kids. My children are reading these books now. Please check them out and recommend them to your friends.
Thank you for the stories Mr. Robinson, they have enriched my life.
I originally bought this book for my 10-year-old son. After he was about halfway through he told me he wanted me to read it. So I did, and the race was on. We both enjoyed this book tremendously. This is one of the rare books I have "caught" my son reading outside his mandatory reading time. Any book that can get my son to read on his own deserves at least four stars, but a book that gets both my son and I reading and discussing it together earns five. Thank you Mr. Robinson for an awesome book!
This was a fun book that I think kids and families with kids can enjoy. The story is very engaging and holds the attention to the end. If you are fans of fantasy (shape-shifters, mythical creatures, etc.) you should give it a shot, and though it is geared toward kids, I enjoyed it as an adult. I will listen to this again with my kids (5- and 6-years old) on our next road trip. I listened to the Audible audio version of this book, and the narrator takes some getting used to. He does really well at giving each character a unique voice, but I had a hard time listening to the lisping "Emily" character, and the narrator does have a "unique" cadence when doing the "narrator" voice, which I was really distracted by in the first book I listened to by him, but have since gotten mostly used to. Overall, a fun, clean book that can be enjoyed together as a family.
I've been meaning to review Island of Fog for some time, since reading it a few months ago. I've also been lucky enough to get a sneak preview of the sequel, Labyrinth of Fire, which is also a brilliant read. Keith Robinson creates a very believable, witty, action-packed world on the 'Island of Fog', where Hal and his friends have grown up without seeing sunlight and where they seem to be isolated from the outside world. When Hal and his friend Robbie find a hole in the forest the fog is apparently coming out of, the mystery starts. But not only do they have to deal with the idea of the fog and whether their parents have been lying to them all this time, they and their classmates also seem to be physically changing into different creatures...
The link between the changes, the fog and why the children and their parents are effectively marooned on the small island all becomes clear as the story hurtles on at breakneck pace. This is a superb book for children, with plenty of action, mystery and humour as well as great characterisation of Hal and his friends, and a very detailed plot that will keep any reader involved with the story. Hal is one of the most likeable characters I have met in children's fiction, and the reader will feel involved with him right to the end.
The best thing about Island of Fog is that it's only the first of a series. Hal and his friends solve the mystery in this book, but that only leads to more questions, and more action in the sequel Labyrinth of Fire. Both are truly excellent books for young people in the best tradition of children's fiction - I'll be buying anything else Keith Robinson writes.
This book is written in a really specific style. It's one of those adventure books where kids band together and keep things from adults and say words like "nor" and "mustn't" the way kids absolutely don't in real life. But not in an "I don't understand kids" way. In an "I'm going for a particular aesthetic" way. I can dig it.
I wasn't a huge fan of the main character for a good while though. You ever read a book you felt was following the wrong character? That's how I felt here. You have Hal aggressively avoiding all the signs that he's the protag of an adventure novel and brushing off Abigail who keeps popping in to try and kickstart the plot. I'm thinking, "Stop adventure-blocking her dude!" She seemed like the much more interesting character to me. Actually curious about the obvious weird stuff going on and doing something about it. Hal gets much more likable once he finally succumbs to the plot (which, sidenote, takes him far too long to do). Also, as I was reading I stopped to text my younger brother and ask him if he was part of any, "No girls allowed" shenanigans when he was in this age range. He said it didn't really work like that which is the same experience I had. I dunno. Maybe we just went to a really chill school and that really is something that happens in real life all the time.
This book starts off seriously slow and even once you sort of know what's going on, it takes a while longer before the reason is explained. And, I gotta say, it's a pretty cool and creative reason. Probably my favorite reveal of the book. I just wish it didn't take so long to get there.
I'll also say I think this book did a good job making all of the kid characters (there were quite a few. I wanna say 8) distinct which is hard with such a big cast.
As a whole I'd say there was more good than bad here and it was a good setup for the series. Without spoiling anything, the last couple of chapters or so lay out the mystery (which, side note, I really wished that someone had just leveled with the kids at some point. Or that the kids had just been straight with their parents. I hate the plot device where one party has all of the information and a simple conversation would have solved everything. There's a lot of that here which is why the plot drags in some places) and you can easily see where they next books are heading. It's a real cool concept. I just wish this book had cut to the chase and gotten there sooner.
