I don't usually write reviews. I'm a very fast reader; I usually go through at least four books in a given week, if not more, so a book has to be pretty damn special for me to take the time to review it. This one is.This is everything an urban fantasy should be. Thrilling, fast paced, with a plot that twists and doubles back on itself masterfully, all the while utilizing a worldview that draws heavily on folklore and actual magical lore. Chris Underwood has just made his way to the top of my Immediate Buy least, and he's tied with Craig Shaefer, which is a huge compliment. Of you're a fan of books like the Daniel Faust series or Black Magic Outlaw, buy this book immediately. It's perfection

Cunning Devil Lost Falls Book 1 edition by Chris Underwood Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews
I suppose I would rate this as kind of OK. I've been in a reading tear lately so I've been getting books I normally otherwise wouldn't have, this series being one of them. I actually first read about this universe in a collection of short stories, and it was reasonable enough that I thought I'd give it a spin.
On the pro side, this book has its own flavor, not being just a derivation of other established series in the genre. It seems to be grammatically correct, and doesn't over or under emphasize descriptive text. The magic system is, without calling it good or bad, at least not boilerplate.
On the con side, the characters are, to me, kind of flat and just don't pop. The movement through the plot is also, to me, kind of weak. Ozzy - the main character - just seems to assume/tell us that things are important when, without the main character explicitly telling me so, I would not otherwise have thought so. The villains also kind of just monologue. The magic system, while not the same as the most popular urban fantasy series out there, is not flashy enough to call it exciting.
It's an average read, for me, but not so bad that I would refuse to finish it or anything. Writing is hard, and just putting together a whole story is an enormous effort; I applaud the author for that. But based on this one book I think it shows that it takes a little more practice to have a really polished work that stands up to scrutiny. But it's the first book in the series, so I'll look forward to seeing how the author matures in writing style.
This book is just what I was looking for - a gritty tale of the supernatural with a human-scale protagonist, and no traces of bodice-ripping to be found.
Ozzy gained his power the hard way, through sacrifice and study. His abilities are modest compared to the super-powered wizards that populate the pages of most such stories, and were all the more believable for it. Ozzy is definitely one of my favorite characters in recent memory.
I'm eagerly awaiting Book 2!
Instinct and talent combine for the main characters... each with his own mix. The story is well thought out to grab interest and hearts, but romance, it's not. Motives are entirely believable. The magic is even believable... in fact it's believable enough to convince me that I don't want in on it. The pace is easy at first and driving by the end. Motivations of all concerned were understandable and reasonable. Usually, I finish a book and wish I could live in that world. This book is finished in quite a satisfying way, but I do not wish to live in that world. I do feel that it is probably more real than most of the fantasy worlds I have read about. I did not feel there was any separation between myself and the emotions and actions of the characters of the book. All were exactly as I would have done, but with an understanding that there would be a price paid... and there was. A very well thought out idea from start to finish, and just as in the Real World... there is always a price. EXCELLENT.
I'll be clear, I paid for this book on a countdown deal. I'm leaving this review because I know how new authors struggle without reviews. I don't know the author but I hope he's slavishly working on book 2. I'm only 25% into the book yet I know it can't possibly tank bad enough for me to retract this review. His character building is wonderful--I'm not giving any spoilers, just wait until you meet Alcaraz, Lillian and the Dealer. It's a glorious experience reading a book by a new author that doesn't need editing! I love urban fantasy but most of it isn't fresh anymore. This is, with new twists on old species.
I finished the book today (3-22) and my above review still applies with the exception of the couple editing errors I saw, certainly not enough to detract from the story or require another edition be uploaded. The downside is what it the hell am I going to read now? *sigh*
So I almost passed over this book because it showed up amongst some of those terrible (IMHO) Supernatural romance novels and the cover blended in with all of those.
Then it turned up on my Goodreads list so I checked out some of the reviews and took a punt, so glad I did.
The Dark and Mysterious Lost Falls unfolds at a great pace, not too much, just enough to keep the story moving but it hints at so much more. I like the approach tot he supernatural and I liked the way the Characters become more and more real as the story unfolds. The protagonist certainly comes to life and the book wraps up really well with a good lead into further stories.
Comparable to Dresdon etc if you want to put a Genre title on it, but its unique and dark and a bit gritty.
